About This Experience

Four hours in a 4x4 through the best-known parts of the protected area, run by Bedouin guides who grew up in it. The morning departure leaves at 09:00 and the afternoon at 14:30, and the afternoon one is timed to finish with sunset from a viewpoint - which is the version most people should book.

You stop for tea brewed with cardamom over a fire, which is less of a gimmick than it sounds: it is also the moment the engine noise stops and you hear how quiet the desert is. The route takes in the sandstone formations, the canyons and the film locations, including those used for The Martian.

This is the standalone option for travellers already in Wadi Rum or Aqaba, and the cheapest way onto this site's list. Children under nine go free.

Good to Know & Caveats

• Departures are 09:00-13:00 or 14:30-18:30. The afternoon run is the one that ends at sunset.
• The Wadi Rum Protected Area entry fee is 5 JOD and is paid at the gate, not to the operator.
• There is no mobile phone coverage in the desert.
• Nights and early mornings are cold from October to March even when the afternoon is hot.
