The Experience

Why a Private Car Beats the Coach

What the top-rated Petra day trip from Amman includes, and what it deliberately leaves modular.

Highlights

  • Private vehicle from your Amman hotel or the airport, not a shared coach
  • A full block of time inside Petra rather than a rushed visit
  • Optional licensed guide at the site, or a private guide for the whole day
  • Entry tickets and lunch selectable as add-ons
  • Wi-Fi and water on board

What's Included

  • Private pickup and drop-off in Amman or at the airport
  • English-speaking driver
  • Private vehicle for your party only
  • Wi-Fi and bottled water on board
  • Entry fees, a local site guide, a full-day private guide and lunch (each if that option is selected)

How a Petra Day Trip from Amman Works

Four stages, and one of them is three hours of desert highway.

  1. Pre-dawn pickup

Collection from your Amman hotel or from Queen Alia International Airport, usually between 05:00 and 07:00. The early start is arithmetic, not theatre — Petra closes and the drive back is another three hours.

  2. 225 km down the Desert Highway

About three hours with no major stops. The King's Highway is the beautiful road and adds well over an hour each way, which is why day trips do not use it.

  3. The Siq, then Petra at your own pace

A 1.2 km walk through the canyon before the Treasury appears. Tickets are 50 JOD at the gate unless you added them at checkout; a licensed guide is a separate add-on and is worth it.

  4. Back to Amman by evening

Eleven hours door to door on the private option. If you are flying out the same night, the airport drop-off is on the same booking.

Planning Notes

Getting Petra Right in One Day

Where the hours go, what the ticket costs, and the two decisions that change the day.

Petra rewards time, and a day trip from Amman gives you less of it than you would like. That is the whole problem, and every sensible decision about this trip follows from it.

The drive is roughly 225 km each way, about three hours on the Desert Highway in each direction. Six hours of a day is therefore spoken for before you have walked anywhere. What is left — five to seven hours depending on the operator — is enough for the Siq, the Treasury, the Street of Facades, the theatre and the Royal Tombs at a civilised pace. It is not enough for the Monastery, which sits 850 rock-cut steps above the valley floor and needs a deliberate early start of its own.

The ticket is the bigger cost than you expect

Entry is 50 JOD — around $70 — for a one-day ticket, and that rate applies only if you are spending at least one night in Jordan. Day visitors who arrive and leave the country the same day pay 90 JOD. Almost no tour includes it by default, though several let you add it at checkout, which saves queuing at the gate. If Petra is one of several ticketed sites on your trip, price the Jordan Pass instead — it bundles Petra with 40-odd attractions and waives the tourist visa fee.

Private or group

The private options cost more per person for one or two travellers and less for four, and they buy flexibility that matters here: your own pickup time, your own pace inside the site, and an airport pickup if you are working around a flight. The group departures are cheaper and leave from a fixed point at a fixed time — they will not wait.

Should you add a guide?

Yes, if the history is why you came. A great deal of Petra is not self-evident: the difference between a tomb and a temple, the water-management system that made a city possible in a desert, why the facades are Hellenistic rather than Nabataean in style. A licensed site guide is an add-on on most of these bookings.

If you have a second day to spare, the two-day and three-day itineraries add Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea for less than the cost of doing each separately.

"Everything was in order as it should be, the company communication with the time of pick up and the card with my name to verify. The driver IBRAHIM very kind and nice man, making stops through the trip also explaining and giving us tips for the city. On the other hand the guide that was arranged by the company again mr ESSAM was very good nice and clean English , we understood everything and was like a friend in the group. Amazing photos with the best views of the Petra and we were in luck it was less visitors instead of the classic Wonder tourism. Overall very nice experience without any problem at all. Recommended 10/10"

"Me and my girlfriend took a day trip to Petra archaeological site from Amman. Our tour guide Shadi greeted us at 8 am infront of our stay as we agreed. He drove us 3 hours to Petra archaeological site, during travelling he gave us very deep information not only about Petra also history, culture, current status of Jordan which we appreciated a lot. We didnt feel how we reached Petra which Shadi made our time past so quickly. As mentioned i in itinerary we spent full 5 hours in Petra for exploring ancient Nabateans was wonderful experience. After our itineary Shadi took us back to Amman another 3 hours and we had some good conversations about Jordan. We really enjoyed our day trip to Petra and highl recommend Shadi as a tour guide which he is really professional, knowledgeable and true representative of Jordan people."

"We had a beautiful day trip to Petra & Basaam was so accommodating. We were collected very promptly from our hotel in the morning & the vehicle was very comfortable. We did not feel rushed during our time at Petra and had ample time to explore the site, including the monastery. During our driving time, Basaam, very kindly stopped whenever we needed a rest & to get lunch on the way back to Amman. I would definitely recommend to friends and family!"

"This tour was the highlight of our trip! From start to finish, our driver Bardaghawi took care of us with plenty of water, bathroom stops, and also showing us the best falafel spot! Bardaghawi also shared a lot of interesting history with us along the way. Once at Petra, he helped connect us with a local guide who was wonderful and gave us so much information and history about Petra. He also took many great photos of us. I recommend this tour- and I recommended visiting Jordan asap. It’s a beautiful, safe country and everyone is eager to welcome you!"
