The single decision that separates every Petra and Wadi Rum itinerary on the market.

Petra and Wadi Rum are 110 km apart — an hour and a half of driving between a rock-cut Nabataean city and a sandstone desert that has stood in for Mars in half a dozen films. Pairing them is the most natural itinerary in Jordan, and essentially every operator offers it in two shapes.

The fourteen-hour day

One long day from Amman, roughly 600 km of driving, no overnight anywhere. It is the most-reviewed tour on this site after the two-day loop, with over 800 verified reviews at 4.9/5, so it plainly works — largely because it starts before dawn and the drivers know precisely how much time each stop can absorb.

You get the Siq, the Treasury, Petra’s main street and a two-hour 4x4 run in Wadi Rum. What you do not get is the camp night, and reviewers of the overnight versions mention that more than anything else.

The two-day version

Add a night and the day stops being a race. You reach Wadi Rum in the late afternoon, when the light on the sandstone is the reason people photograph the place at all, and you sleep in a Bedouin camp. Most two-day itineraries then add the Dead Sea on the return leg for very little extra, which is why the full three-stop loop is more booked than the two-site version.

What neither includes

Petra is 50 JOD at the gate and Wadi Rum charges a 5 JOD conservation fee. Some options bundle tickets at checkout; most do not. Budget for them separately either way — the details are in the entry fee guide.

If you are already in the south

Travellers based in Aqaba or Wadi Rum itself do not need the Amman round trip at all. A standalone Wadi Rum jeep tour starts from $44, and the afternoon departure ends at sunset — which is the version to book if the choice costs nothing.
