Doing the Dead Sea Properly
How long to stay in, what the beach access costs, and the mistakes that ruin it.
The Dead Sea is the easiest thing to do in Jordan and the easiest to do badly. It is under an hour from Amman, sits more than 400 metres below sea level, and is salty enough that floating is not a skill but a fact. None of which stops people getting it wrong.
Twenty minutes, not two hours
The salt concentration that makes you float also strips skin. Twenty minutes at a time is the standard guidance and it is genuinely enough. Longer and you will know about it — particularly on any cut, graze or shaving nick you had forgotten about. Do not shave the morning you go. And keep the water out of your eyes; if it gets in, it is a fresh-water rinse and several unpleasant minutes, not a blink.
Public beach or resort pass
Public access exists and is cheap. The resort day pass costs more — the operators here handle it as roughly $40 per person in cash on the day — and buys the one thing that actually matters: fresh-water showers. Dried Dead Sea salt on skin and swimwear is a particular kind of miserable, and the mud treatment everyone photographs is only enjoyable if you can get it off afterwards.
The Baptism Site is worth the stop
Forty minutes north, Bethany Beyond the Jordan is the UNESCO-listed site on the east bank identified as the place where Jesus was baptised. It holds Roman and Byzantine church remains, mosaics and hermit caves, and it is markedly quieter than the west-bank equivalent. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — because it remains an active place of pilgrimage.
Or do it on the way home
Almost every two-day and three-day Petra itinerary on this site finishes at the Dead Sea on the drive back to Amman, which is the most efficient way to fit it in. A standalone trip makes sense if you want longer at the water, or if you are pairing it with the Baptism Site rather than treating it as a half-hour stop.

"First, we saw the baptism site for Jesus. It was a little rushed. The guidethat worked at the site had a lot of people to accommodate, but it was interesting. Then we went to the dead Sea. I would say it’s impossible to drown in the Dead Sea since you float like a buoy as soon as you get in. Then we applied the black mud all over our bodies as they are supposed to have minerals within them that helps the skin. We lounged by the pool at the hotel they selected. The hotel was large and beautiful and the food there was great. As is all the food in Jordan. I wanna let everybody know that considering the unrest in the Middle East Jordan is a very safe country and you shouldn’t be afraid to travel here . We enjoyed it very much."
